Global Workshop on Digital Sequence Information and Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

The Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, will hold on 14 & 15 November 2022 a Global Workshop on Digital Sequence Information and Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture with the Convention on Biological Diversity, the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, CABI and the CGIAR Genebank Initiative. In preparation of the next Session of the Commission, the Workshop aims to raise awareness among relevant stakeholders of the role of DSI for the conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources for food and agriculture and the sharing of benefits derived from them.

UN Biodiversity Conference to discuss global biodiversity framework

The second part of the UN Biodiversity Conference will convene from 7 to 19 December 2022 in Montréal, Canada. The Conference comprises meetings of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity and its Protocols on biosafety and access and benefit-sharing. The Conference will be preceded by another round of negotiations on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and the issue of digital sequence information (3-5 December). New Action Plan for Biodiversity Mainstreaming

FAO’s Committees on Agriculture (COAG-28), Forestry (COFO-25) and Fisheries (COFI-35) discussed at their sessions in 2022 the implementation of the FAO Strategy on Mainstreaming Biodiversity across Agricultural Sectors and its 2021-23 Action Plan.
They also considered the draft 2024-27 Action Plan for the next phase of implementation of the Biodiversity Mainstreaming Strategy. As noted in the Action Plan, the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, at its next Session in 2023, will be involved in the review and updating of the Action Plan.

The Ninth Session of the ITPGRFA Governing Body

The Ninth Session of the ITPGRFA Governing Body (GB-9) took place from 19- to 24 September 2022 gathering almost 600 participants in New Delhi, India, with a few attending virtually. It advanced negotiations on Farmers’ Rights and the enhancement of the Treaty’s Multilateral System of Access and Benefit-sharing. It also celebrated farmers as guardians of crop diversity and the International Year of Millets. The next session of the Governing Body will be held in November 2023.

20 years of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS)

2022 marks the 20th anniversary of the FAO Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems. FAO launched GIAHS at the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg in 2002. Since its inception, the number of agricultural systems recognized as GIAHS has been gradually increasing. To date, the programme counts 67 sites recognized in 22 countries. By the end of September 2022, there are 10 official candidates and many more are under identification.

How sustainable forest management can enhance the world’s biodiversity

Protecting the animals, plants, fungi and microorganisms that thrive in forests must become a fundamental goal of sustainable forest management worldwide, according to a new report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and partners launched on 6 October 2022.
Forests are home to most of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity, yet forests and their biodiversity continue to be lost at an alarming rate.
