The FAO conducts a Remote Sensing Survey (RSS) as part of the Global Forest Resources Assessment in close collaboration with FAO Members. The objectives of the survey are to build country capacities to use remote sensing for forest monitoring as well as to generate independent, robust and consistent estimates of forest area and its changes over time at global, regional and biome levels.

This progress report is part of a series of communications that provides updates on the data collection process and supports the building of a global network of skilled photo interpreters.

Putting the spotlight on remote sensing data collection in Brazil

Collecting data for about 50 thousand samples falling within its territory, Brazil provided a significant contribution to the FRA 2020 Remote Sensing Survey.

Two workshops were organized to train national officers for the data collection, an event held in Belém in May 2019 and a virtual training held in June 2020.

Over 150 experts engaged in the data collection and, thanks to their knowledge of local ecosystems, they managed to cover fully Brazil's different biomes. For this occasion, the Brazilian Forest Service also produced six explanatory videos in Portuguese for the participants, one for each biome: Amazonia, Caatinga, Cerrado, Mata Atlantica, Pampa, Pantanal.

With this exercise, a promising collaboration has been established, which could eventually help Brazil to scale up efforts to monitor, protect and sustainably manage their unvaluable forest resources.

Collect Earth Online

Data collection is conducted through participatory and collaborative approaches, engaging national experts in learning-by-doing training sessions on the latest remote sensing methodology and tools, including the Collect Earth Online platform which FAO has developed in collaboration with Google and NASA.
