COVID-19 and Agroecology reading list

The FAO agroecology team has collected up to 60 articles on COVID-19 exploring the impacts of COVID-19 on food systems with specific focus on agroecological approaches in some cases. You will find multimedia material, articles, statements from civil society, papers, resources, practices and experiences to mitigate COVID-19 food crisis.
The articles show the linkages between unsustainable agricultural practices and food systems, between loss of biodiversity and the outbreak of pandemics.

Communiqué by IPES-Food: COVID-19 and the crisis in food systems - symptoms, causes, and potential solutions

The International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food) calls for agroecological food systems as a structural reform to build resilience to future shocks. IPES-Food indicates that while COVID-19 has exposed critical weaknesses and inequalities “the crisis has given a glimpse of new, more resilient ways of feeding communities”.

FAO’s Multidisciplinary Fund (MDF) supports knowledge sharing and capacity building on agroecology in Tanzania to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
In November 2019 FAO co-organized the Conference on National Ecological Organic Agriculture within the framework of the Scaling up Agroecology Initiative, supported by MDF. During the event, the country’s Agriculture Parliament Committee chairperson encourage the government to accelerate the implementation of agroecology approaches endorsed in national policies and actions plans.
