Non-wood forest products (NWFPs) are goods of biological origin other than wood, derived from forests, other wooded land and trees outside forests. NWFPs and similar terms such as “minor”, “secondary” and “non-timber” forest products (NTFPs) have emerged as umbrella expressions for the vast array of both animal and plant products other than wood derived from forests or forest tree species. Unlike the term “NWFPs”, “NTFPs” also includes fuelwood and small woods used for domestic tools and equipment.

No. 16 Indigenous Food Systems

Dear Readers,

This issue looks at indigenous food systems and holistic approaches to food generation and resource management. Highlights from the First High-Level Expert Seminar on Indigenous Food Systems, held at FAO headquarters --  which also include many forest-based food systems -- are featured in this issue. The seminar showcased some of the initial results of a study undertaken by FAO and Bioversity International to look at the food systems and climate change adaptation debate through analytical and field activities on indigenous food systems. Our opening piece summarizes the event. Yon Fernández-de-Larrinoa (FAO Indigenous Peoples team leader), Anne Brunel and Mariana Estrada provide insights into the seminar in this issue’s interview.

High-Level Expert Seminar on Indigenous Food Systems: Building on traditional knowledge to achieve Zero Hunger

Over the last few years, there has been increasing attention towards indigenous food systems and their holistic approach to food generation and resource management. At the international level, there have been extensive discussions to define sustainable food systems in relation to the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). In addition, the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016-2025) calls on the enhancement of sustainable food systems and on the importance of diversifying diets with nutritious foods, while broadening the existing food base and preserving biodiversity.

In-depth

Barbara Burlingame on linking ecosystems and sustainable diets

“Research on indigenous food systems can provide the evidence base for programmes, policies and actions for improving public health and sustainable agriculture,” said Dr. Burlingame in her presentation. She also stressed the importance of biodiversity and food composition data. “Research on indigenous food systems examines the past to protect the future,” she added.

FAO’s Anna Lartey on the challenges facing today’s food systems, including benefits of forest foods

Global trends, such as climate variability, population growth, urbanisation, conflicts and crisis, economic development are fundamentally moving our food systems in the wrong direction, said Lartey.  “Food Systems transformation needs to respond to multiple challenges to deliver on healthy and nutritious diets.

Thingnaning Longvah on the Importance of Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems in Northeast India

Food biodiversity is the key to ensuring food security, adequate nutrition and health, said Thingnaning Longvah from India’s National Institute for Nutrition. “This is reflected in the strikingly much better nutritional status, lower prevalence of non-communicable diseases among the Chakhesangs peoples as compared to the rest of India."

Nguyen Thi Van Anh on an Indigenous Local Food System in Vietnam

Nguyen Thi Van Anh from the Institute for Social Development Study presented a case study on a diversified food system in Viet Nam based on both different traditional and high-yield varieties. Among these foods include wild products for consumption and sale such as small animals, insects and wild plants (e.g. bamboo shoots). These wild foods have however declined over time, says Van Anh.

Christiana Louwa Saiti on Opportunities and Challenges from Lake Turkana, Kenya

Christiana Louwa Saiti, representative of the representative of the Elmolo community of Kenya, discussed a fishing hunting and gathering food system -- often “forgotten” NWFPs. The food system of the Elmolo people is deeply rooted in their culture, indigenous knowledge of the lake and other natural resources, explained Saiti. The system involves fishing, hunting and gathering.

Julie Brimblecombe on finding the balance between two food systems through supporting Indigenous decision-making in Australia

“Traditional food connects people to culture and country,” said Julie Brimblecombe, Principle Research Fellow from the Menzies School of Research in Australia. “Indigenous people continue to be empowered with the information needed to make evidence-informed decisions about their food system."

Interview

Yon Fernández-de-Larrinoa (FAO Indigenous Peoples team leader), Anne Brunel and Mariana Estrada

“There are a number of ongoing processes at an international level dealing with food systems -- the Decade of Action on Nutrition, FAO’s Food Systems framework, the Decade on Biodiversity, COP discussions on the issue of sustainability and the climate change agenda — forcing people to look with a more systemic approach to different challenges."

Product watch

Miracle berry (Synsepalum dulcifcum)

This African native shrub pulp has extraordinary sweet effects (“miraculin” a sweetening glycoprotein). Every sour or acidic food eaten after eating the fruit tastes very sweet. It is used as reliable alternative to sugar.
