Dear Readers,

The focus of this issue is biodiversity. Highlights include an interview with Julie Belanger, coordinator of FAO’s first-ever global report on the state of biodiversity launched earlier this year, UNCTAD’s BioTrade initiative and the launch of the NTFP Bioeconomy Taskforce. We also welcome back Sven Walter, new team leader for Forest Products and Statistics, who opens this issue.

NWFP and biodiversity are inseparably connected, and the opportunities provided by NWFP to promote the sustainable use of biodiversity actually triggered the research in this – at that time – new field of work some decades ago. It permitted us to have a closer look at the multitude of products provided by forests and trees outside forests often perceived as minor and to recognize their major contributions to sustainable development.

Non-wood forest products (NWFPs) are goods of biological origin other than wood, derived from forests, other wooded land and trees outside forests. NWFPs and similar terms such as “minor”, “secondary” and “non-timber” forest products (NTFPs) have emerged as umbrella expressions for the vast array of both animal and plant products other than wood derived from forests or forest tree species. Unlike the term “NWFPs”, “NTFPs” also includes fuelwood and small woods used for domestic tools and equipment.
