FAO promotes the National Agroecology Policy of Nicaragua

FAO Nicaragua and FAO experts on Agroecology, Emma Siliprandi and Arnoldo Anacleto together with the Ministry of Agriculture of Nicaragua and the National System of Production, Consumption and Commerce are working on the updating of the national agroecology policy of Nicaragua by integrating gender, education and market-based incentives.

The importance of Agroecology in the cotton production

Agroecology is the approach that leads the regional cooperation project South-South Trilateral “More Cotton” through FAO, the Brazilian Cooperation Agency and the Brazilian Institute of Cotton. This project seeks to strengthen the sector cotton in farmer field schools and indigenous communities of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru.

FAO and UNEP leading agencies of the
UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030

The UN General Assembly declared on 1 March 2019 that the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration aims to massively scale up the restoration of degraded and destroyed ecosystems as a proven measure to fight the climate crisis and enhance food security, water supply and biodiversity, and can prevent conflict and migration triggered by environmental degradation.

The Decade, a global call to action, will draw together political support, scientific research and financial muscle to massively scale up restoration from successful pilot initiatives to areas of millions of hectares.

FAO Kyrgyzstan hosts the first Dialogue on Agroecology in Central Asia

The first dialogue on Agroecology in Central Asian countries was held in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) on August 28 of 2019.

FAO together with representatives from a number of agencies and experts from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey and others, discussed gaps and opportunities on Agroecology to scale up activities that can transform agricultural production and food systems into agroecological food systems.
The successful workshop raised awareness of the multiple benefits that Agroecology can provide in Central Asian countries.

Insect apocalypse caused by pesticides

Friends of the Earth present this video explaining the cause of the bees’ death: the use of neonic pesticides. It is based on a study that shows that U.S. Agriculture is 48 times more toxic to insect life now than two decades ago, when they started using neonic pesticides. The consequences of this insect apocalypse is the collapse of ecosystems, including those that feed us.

 

AGROECOLOGY COURSES REGISTRATION

Autumn School of AgroEcology, 23-27 September in Italy

A wide range of professors from University of California Berkeley (USA), Universidade Estadual Paulista (Brazil) and Universidad de Chile among others will drive the School by tackling issues like the role of biodiversity in the functioning of agroecosystems and the tools on how to manage the transition from conventional to agroecological systems. The participation is free and the school will offer also a practical experience by learning the agroecological practices used by the locals.
