Launch of the HLPE Report “Agroecological and other innovative approaches for sustainable agriculture and food systems that enhance food security and nutrition”

The report offers promising recommendations to follow appropriate transition pathways towards sustainable food systems by enhancing food security and nutrition and by tackling power inequalities in the food system. Agroecology has proven to be a major contributor towards achieving these goals.

The recommendations stress that this agroecological transition is only possible by empowering vulnerable groups, by supporting diversified and resilient food systems and by establishing monitoring frameworks for food systems among others.

UN Environment urges to call for a food systems revolution

Food production sustains us all, but it also comes at a cost: water sources are being depleted and contaminated by food production, and unhealthy diets are burdening our health care systems.

This article points out that Agroecology is about tackling environmental and socioeconomic issues but also hunger, contrary to popular belief. With more than 800 million undernourished people in the world and a major global obesity crisis, agroecology can, and is, providing new solutions.

Latest from ASIA AND THE PACIFIC

Regional workshop on Scaling-up Agroecology in Higher Education

The workshop was hosted by MaeJo University in Chiang Mai (Thailand) on 26-27 June and was attended by representatives of 11 Universities from 8 different countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) but also Agencies of the United Nations and research institutes.

The workshop represents a stepping stone towards developing a regional project addressing Agroecology and Higher Education Institutions in ASEAN. In the framework of this collaboration, some Policy Briefs are also being drafted entitled how to (re)engage youth into agriculture through Higher Education Institutions.

La Red Nacional de Agricultura Familiar (RENAF) and el Movimiento Agroecológico de América Latina y el Caribe (MAELA) organize the workshop at the National University of Colombia. Political, economic and legal frameworks on agroecology will be discussed.

Third Venezuelan Congress on Agroecology, 17-19 October


The congress aims to generate collective strategies and to articulate policies among different popular and institutional actors that allow building a national agroecological movement.

The Master Degree offered by the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo permits specialists with technical and scientific knowledge to produce, transform, certify and value biological agricultural products in the sectors of animal production, horticulture, fruit growing, viticulture and aromatic plants and medicines.
