4th African Organic Conference

The Last 5-8 of November, 160 participants from more than 30 countries met in Saly, Senegal, for the 4th African Organic Conference. The Conference allowed farmers, scientists, policy makers and organic entrepreneurs to share their experiences, solutions and initiatives to mainstream Ecological Organic Agriculture in Africa.

The Conference finalized with the Saly Declaration, which called Member States to “Increase efforts, bridge communication gaps and include ecological organic agriculture in investment programmes”.

Regional Forum on Agroecology Futures

Over 260 participants from 21 nationalities gathered in Siem Reap, Cambodia, to discuss agroecology in the Mekong region in the first Regional Forum on Agroecology Futures. The Forum was a successful and unprecedented thematic meeting on agroecology since FAO’s Regional Symposium in November 2015.

Over three days, participants could learn, share and discuss a broad range of issues affecting the future of agroecology in the region, such as production issues, the importance of innovation or marketing of agroecological products.

G-STIC 2018: Agroecology for sustainable food systems

During last 28-30 of November, Brussels was home to the second Global Sustainable Technology and Innovation Conference (G-STIC), focused on integrated solutions to facilitate the world-wide implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

During the Conference, agroecology was “reconfirmed as an integrated suite of technologies, innovations, practices and knowledge embedded in a larger framework that respects farmer’s knowledge, ensures equity and focuses on empowering the critical agents of change: family farmers, smallholder producers, indigenous peoples, fishers, rural women and youth.

Agroecology in the Week of Agriculture and Food

Last 22nd of November, more than 500 participants met in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for the Week of Agriculture and Food, a regional forum for multiple actors from rural areas.

The "Sustainability in rural territories: contributions of agroecology" semi-plenary panel shared existing evidences of agroecology’s economic, social and environmental performance and pointed key steps for its scaling up in the region to achieve a transition towards more inclusive, sustainable and resilient food systems.

Agroecology in LAC: FAO-SOCLA agreement

FAO and the Latin American Cientific Society of Agroecology (SOCLA) signed a memorandum of understanding to foster joint actions on agroecology in the region. The agreement will focus on information creation and sharing, knowledge management and capacity development in the context of territorial food systems and the scaling up of agroecology.

This publication results from the compilation of over 20 case studies and collective researches on agroeoclogy in the Mekong region. In addition to conveying valuable knoweldge, these stories could inspire others to act for a transition toward agroecology in the region.
